Giant Lizard Invades Fresno…?

PEOPLE IN VICINITY OF CHUKCHANSI PARK CAUGHT OFF GUARD BY 3D IMAGE OF ENORMOUS REPTILE

CAUSES COMMOTION AS IT REALISTICALLY APPEARS TO BE CRAWLING OUT OF GROUND

FRESNO, California. February 9, 2012 – Local exterminators better be on alert; a giant lizard seems to have invaded our fair city and is causing quite a commotion in the vicinity of Chukchansi Park, home of the Fresno Grizzlies Baseball Club. But as it turns out, there is no cause for alarm – the “giant lizard” is actually an enormous 3D image, 10 x 20 feet to be precise, promoting the upcoming New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. action adventure film, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” opening this Friday.

The eerily realistic image, placed there as part of the marketing campaign for the film, has been causing quite a stir since its unveiling earlier today. The giant reptile appears to be emerging from underground amidst its own eggs, seemingly ready to pounce at any moment on nearby unsuspecting pedestrians. As one of six locations selected for the decal placement to promote the upcoming release, some locals don’t seem to be too concerned that the image may frighten away the public. On the contrary, the general consensus seems to be that, if something can generate this much excitement around town, even if it is a giant lizard – it can only be a good thing.

ABOUT THE FILM

The follow-up to the hit 2008 film, “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the new film takes young Sean Anderson to a mysterious island where no island should exist: a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” stars Dwayne Johnson, Michael Caine, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Luis Guzmán and Kristin Davis. Directed by Brad Peyton from a screenplay by Brian Gunn & Mark Gunn, story by Richard Outten and Brian Gunn & Mark Gunn, it is produced by Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson, and Charlotte Huggins, with Richard Brener, Michael Disco, Samuel J. Brown, Marcus Viscidi, Michael Bostick and Evan Turner as executive producers. A New Line Cinema presentation of a Contrafilm Production, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and will be available concurrently in IMAX® theaters worldwide. Rated PG for some adventure action and brief, mild language.

Reminder for Fresno homeschoolers: Info Meeting TOMORROW (Friday)!

Just a reminder for those interested…current or potential Fresno homeschoolers:
(More info available in the previous post about this.)

For anyone interested in learning more about the possibility of a satellite program here in Fresno for the excellent homeschool charter “Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center,”(which is based in Visalia)…This is a reminder that the info meeting is tomorrow evening, Friday Dec 9, at 6pm at The Discovery Center in Fresno.

The Discovery Center is located on Winery between McKinley and Clinton. We are meeting on the property on the east side of Winery (I’m specifying this because TDC is located on both sides of the street…we’ll be meeting on the main property), at 1944 N. Winery.

I am not sure how interesting the meeting will be for children (particularly young ones), but you are welcome to bring them! :) This is also a good time to bring all family members that might be interested in learning more.

If you think you’ll be coming, please email me and let me know so we have an idea as to how many to expect. You can also call me (Tina) on my cell phone at 260-6564 if you need more info or if you have any problems finding us.

You will be able to enter the property (go through the gate) and park within in the grounds in TDC’s small parking lot between the old winery and the space capsule. If the parking lot should fill up (no idea how many people are coming)…just park on the street just outside the gate.

At this meeting you will get to meet Eleanor Roosevelt’s superintendent Frank Murphy and a few of the education coordinators, including the special ed coordinator. You will get to hear all about the program and get all your questions answered about this potential Fresno program.

We have a lot of interest…I hope many of you can come!

Attention local homeschoolers & potential homeschoolers!

The homeschool charter that our family enrolled in this school year is looking into the possibility of opening a satellite program in Fresno! (Its located in Visalia)

If you are a local homeschool family, or a family thinking about homeschooling…and this interests you, please mark your calendars for
Friday, December 9, 2011 at 6pm at The Discovery Center.

The charter is called Eleanor Roosevelt Community Learning Center, and is based in Visalia…but we have enough interest up here in Fresno to look into starting a Fresno satellite program, so come join us at an informational meeting to talk with the superintendent and some of the educators (including their special ed coordinator) from this fabulous program!

ERCLC provides the best of both worlds: the quality of a home education, as the children enrolled here are educated at home by their parents or caregivers…but with free resources and guidance provided by the public school system.

Enrollment is free, and some of the benefits include:

  • An education coordinator to help you in your homeschool journey, as needed–you meet monthly with your coordinator to help guide you on your homeschool journey…if a Fresno satellite program is started, this meeting will take place up here in Fresno.
  • Access to 2 free resource libraries (1 located on the school campus at ERCLC in Visalia, which is geared towards homeschoolers, and 1 that is located in Visalia for Tulare County teachers)…if a Fresno satellite program is started, this is something that you would still need to drive down to Visalia for. But there is the possibility of families like mine picking up and dropping off items for you (I plan to still go down to Visalia periodically, as my children and I have developed relationships down there.)
  • Access to many online resources (many of which are membership based, to which you get a free membership as an ERCLC family, such as www.discoveryeducation.com).
  • Field trips and family education activities…also something you’d need to travel to…but some of these activities are around California, such as the Bass Lake camping trip they had in October.
  • Enrichment classes (completely optional…offered a la carte…pick the ones you want, or don’t take any if you prefer)…If a Fresno satellite program is started, these would happen up here in Fresno, possibly on The Discovery Center property.
  • A warm, supportive community of educators and families that understand the lives and special circumstances of homeschoolers. If a Fresno satellite program is started, we would still be able to plug into the Visalia community (which is WONDERFUL) as desired, but we would also build our own ERCLC community up here in Fresno.

If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment here or email me.

New bird walk group

Just saw this on Mindhub and I joined right away! Hope others here will too!
———————-
You’re invited to join a listserv for people interested in birding trips in and around Fresno. Go to http://groupspaces.com/FresnoCountyBirders/ for more information or to become a member. As a member, you’ll receive email announcements of upcoming trips.

All trips are free (though we encourage you to help drivers pay for gas when carpooling). Participants of all experience levels are welcome. It’s OK if you’ve never been birding before! Most trips are full days, so bring food and drinks, and clothing suitable for being outside most of the day. You’ll need binoculars, but no other special equipment required.

Sewing lessons

Just saw this on the Mindhub email list and thought I’d share here for those who might be interested:

I am offering private sewing lessons at your home. I teach beginning sewing to advanced sewing. I have over 20 years of experience in sewing. I am a graduate in Fashion Design from The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. The cost for this service is $20 per hour or $30 for 90 minutes. I ask that my students have a sewing machine and the supplies needed for each new project. If you are a beginner, the first couple of lessons I will teach you how to use the sewing machine. After the student is comfortable with using the sewing machine, then we will begin the first project. I will work with your schedule and you can learn at your own pace. If you would like more details or are interested in my services please contact me.
